Bennett was born on December 10, 1955, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He played college football at Concordia College under the coach Jim Christopherson. He was drafted by New Orleans Saint in the 3rd round of 1978 NFL Draft.
Barry played on the defensive line for three teams during his 11 year career in the NFL. He played with New Orleans till 1982. After that, he moved to the New York Jets where he played with Mark Gastineau. In 1988, he played one game with Jets and one with the Vikings.
On August 21, 2019, Bennett and his wife Carol were found shot to death at their home in Minnesota. Investigators determined that they were killed on August 19. Carol was shot multiple times in the back and torso, while Barry was shot multiple times in the head and torso.
On August 23, their 22-year-old son named Dylan Bennett was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the killings. It is believed that Dylan has taken his mother’s car and traveled to Ohio from where he boarded a flight to Mexico.
In December 2018, Barry once told Toddy County Sheriff’s Office that Dylan had expressed thoughts about killing his parents while he was in a mental health treatment facility.
