Virgil Van Dijk is a Dutch footballer who plays for an English Club Liverpool and the Netherlands National team as a central defender.
Which Team has Van Dijk played before?
Born in Breda, Van Dijk started his youth career with Willem II before transferring to Groningen in 2010. His professional debut for Groningen came on May 1, 2011, against ADO Den Haag.
Van Dijk was then transferred for Scottish club Celtic for a fee of around £2.6 million. His debut came on August 17 in a 2-0 win against Aberdeen. During his first season, he helped his team to win a Scottish Championship title while he was also named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year. Van Dijk played with Celtic until 2015 before he got transferred to English Premier League club Southampton for a fee of £13 million.
His debut came on September 12, 2015, against West Bromwich Albion. After his magnificent performance with the Saints, he was offered a six-year contract with Southampton. Next year, he became the team captain of Southampton after the departure of Jose Fonte. Van Dijk remained with the club until 2017 where he played 67 times.
Van Dijk then moved to Liverpool on January 1, 2018, for a fee of £75 million. That price tag made him the world’s highest defender. Van Dijk’s debut for Liverpool came on January 5, 2018, in a third round of FA Cup against Everton where he scored the winning goal. That season, Van Dijk helped Liverpool to reach UEFA Champions League final but lost 1-3 to Real Madrid.
The right-footed central defender has appeared 44 times for the Merseyside while he has 24 caps to his name on the national side.
Van Dijk is often considered as an old fashioned defender who possesses aerial power and also strong leadership qualities.

Van Dijk is married to Rike Nooitgedagt. The lovely couple met in the early stages of his career when his career took off in 2013. To support her husband, Rike left her job when he joined Celtic in 2013.
In an interview with the Sun, she told “I worked as a sales manager and sold different fashion brands to the stores in Holland. I loved it but had to resign to follow my man everywhere football takes him to. So far we’ve been settling well and having adventures with our lovely dog”.
Together with Rike, Van Dijk shares a lovely four-year-old daughter Nila.
