Cale Makar

Cale Makar is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who plays for the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League.

Family and Early Career

Cale was born on October 30, 1998, in Calgary, Alberta as the son to Gary Makar and Laura MacGregor. He has one younger brother Taylor who plays at the junior level with the Brooks Bandits.

Makar played with the Corwchild Blackhawks minor-hockey program before moving to play with NWCAA Bruins at the Bantam level in 2011. In 2013, he was drafted at the major level junior level by the Medicine Hat Tigers in the eighth round.

As a 17-year-old junior, he established himself as a prolific defenceman with the Bandits in 2015/16, logging 55 points in 54 games earning him AJHL All-League and All-Rookie recognition. He earned AJHL and CJHL Rookie of the Year Awards, the Western Canada Cup Top Defenceman Award, and Most Valuable Player Awards.

He continued his success and the in 2016-17 season, he helped Bandits to a second place finish in the Royal Bank Cup. He received CJHL Most Valuable Player Award and won RBC National Junior A Player of the Year Award that year.

Makar was a top prospect coming into the 2017 season. He was selected in the first round, fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

As a freshman, he recorded his first point in his debut against Arizona State University. He finished his 2017 college season with 5 goals and 16 assists for 21 points in 34 games. He was selected with Co-Rookie of the Year honors by the New England Hockey Writers Association.

During his sophomore season with UMass in 2018/19 he was selected for the Hockey East First All-Star Team and was named Hobey Baker Award finalist.

Colorado Avalanche signed Maker to a three-year, entry-level contract on April 14, 2019. His first NHL goal came with his first shot in the league during Game 3 of the first round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Calgary Flames. By scoring, he became the first defenceman to score a playoff goal in the NHL debut.
